June 2004. Review taken from article “Six of the best” with the theme “Large Parties”
Style:
The Interior is styled as a ship’s cabin, with wooden floors, benches and lanterns. This venue offers an excellent variety of fish and seafood.
Location:
On the main street in St Clements, just over Magdalen Bridge leaving the town centre. Pay and display car park to the rear.
Ambience:
Buzzing, stylish and informal atmosphere and usually very busy.
Menu:
A great selection of fish dishes and sea food (as you'd expect) and a small choice of alternatives. All fish sourced from Billingsgate or Looe in Cornwall.
Food:
Our three-course set menu included steamed mussels & smoked salmon for starters, chargrilled tuna special, sea bass with roasted garlic for mains and excellent banana fritters & sticky toffee pudding for dessert.
Service:
The staff worked together like the crew of a racing yacht. This venue received the highest marks ever in feedback from our members. Difficult to beat.
Cost:
A three-course set party menu can be arranged for around £27.50 per head.
Overall Impression:
Excellent service, very friendly staff, food exceeded expectations.
Recommended Occasion:
Good for larger parties, (although no space for a pre-dinner drink), smaller groups or intimate twosomes. One slight downside - they are unable to take bookings for very large parties on Friday or Saturday.
